What is this place?

”I can’t hear you, the roar of the water drowns out your voice.”

For thousands of years, the water surged freely through the gorge landscape, shaping its breathtaking beauty over time. The Göta River has fascinated generations, drawing tourists, artists, and visionaries to the captivating Trollhättan falls.

The immense potential of the water in Trollhättan was evident hundreds of years ago, the water was harnessed for milling purposes during the Middle Ages. However, limited technological advancements hindered the full utilization of the water’s power. Over time, through technological progress and human ingenuity, the region transformed into the vibrant place we see today. For centuries, people have toiled in harmony with and in opposition to nature at this location, resulting in a blend of human ingenuity and natural splendor.

Overcoming Shipping Challenges: Effective Solutions

“The transshipment past the Trollhättan falls was a daunting task”

Throughout history, there has been a persistent desire to transport goods along the Göta River, given its significance as the sole passage between Lake Vänern and the Western Sea. The Trollhättan falls presented a formidable challenge to shipping operations, necessitating a process of unloading, transporting goods over land, and then reloading them onto ships for continued journeying.

Efforts to control the water flow began early, yet the substantial variations in elevation posed a big challenge. It wasn’t until the late 18th century that a breakthrough emerged in addressing how to navigate beyond the towering falls. Through the construction of an extensive canal near the current city, along with the integration of multiple locks, the turbulent currents were pacified, rendering the passage safe for boat traffic.

Many versions of the Trollhättan canal

“Witnessing a 4,000-ton ship being raised in a lock seems like magic, but it's a mesmerizing display of the sheer power of water in action.”

As the current lock lane is becoming too worn out, it’s time to introduce a new one. Nowhere else in the world offers three lock trails, and the forthcoming addition of a fourth will elevate the experience to new heights of spectacle!

The first locks in Trollhättan were opened in 1800. The Trollhättan canal swiftly became a pivotal element in the town’s development, offering prime transport opportunities. However, the canal’s capacity soon proved inadequate. By 1844, a wider lock lane was inaugurated to accommodate larger vessels. With the onset of industrialization, the need for even larger locks became apparent as ships grew in size and goods transport on the Göta River surged. In 1916, the most recent lock lane was opened and remains operational to this day.

Hydropower laid the foundation for our modern society

“Turn on the lights and we can work a little longer”

At the start of the 20th century, hydropower surged in importance with the extended use of electricity. The significant 32-meter drop at the Trollhättan falls made it a remarkable energy source, particularly in southern Sweden.

The introduction of electricity transformed society, first in industries and later in households. The Swedish government’s involvement in the electricity sector led to the creation of Olidan’s hydroelectric power station in Trollhättan, expanding the electricity distribution. Sweden pioneered the establishment of a national grid, electrifying the entire nation. Today, Olidan continues to play a vital role in our electricity supply, a century after its establishment.

Where there is water, there is power

“The factories by the falls are the reason I moved to Trollhättan”

The allure of harnessing the power of the falls attracted numerous entrepreneurs eager to take part in the area’s development. By the 19th century, an increasing number of mills and sawmills dotted the river, quickly evolving into industrial workshops driven by the water’s power. This rapid technological advancement drew people seeking work or entrepreneurial opportunities. As industries flourished along the falls, the influx of residents spurred the establishment of essential social services, gradually forming a cohesive community in what was once a desolate landscape.
